Panasonic Releases Major Firmware Updates for Lumix S Series
Panasonic has released firmware version 1.2 for its Lumix S1R II full-frame mirrorless camera, along with version 1.1 updates for the S1 II and S1 IIE. The S1R II now supports 8.1K and 7.2K (3:2) Open Gate recording with RAW video output via HDMI for use with external recorders. This update allows for full sensor area output, which had previously been downsampled to 6.2K. The firmware also introduces HEIF recording in 4:2:0 10-bit format and adds an HLG View Assist mode for in-camera previewing of HDR images using the HLG curve.
The new firmware includes compatibility with the ARRI LogC3 color profile, intended to facilitate matching Panasonic footage with that from ARRI digital cinema cameras. This feature requires the DMW-SFU3A Software Upgrade Key, which is sold separately.
Additional improvements to the S1R II include an Urban Sports autofocus mode, designed to improve subject detection in scenarios such as skateboarding, breakdancing and parkour. Focus stacking is now available, enabling in-camera synthesis of images taken at different focus points for extended depth of field. There is also an option to use the focus ring as a customizable control ring, and the direction of focus rotation in manual mode can be selected.
New workflow features also include direct file transfers from CFexpress Type B or SD memory cards to external SSDs, proxy recording to internal media during HDMI RAW output and support for data transfer over Wi-Fi and wired LAN to Capture One. Timecode synchronization via Bluetooth is now supported, along with UVC/UAC device compatibility and Bluetooth connectivity with DJI gimbals.
Users can choose from ten autofocus frame colors, and the number of available aspect ratio guide overlays has increased from ten to seventeen, with up to three guides viewable simultaneously.
The same ARRI LogC3 support, aspect ratio expansion, AF frame color options, focus stacking, and Capture One connectivity via LAN or Wi-Fi are also present in firmware version 1.1 for the S1 II and S1 IIE.
Firmware version 1.2 for the S1R II and version 1.1 for the S1 II and S1 IIE are already available through Panasonic’s Global Customer Support site. The DMW-SFU3A upgrade for ARRI LogC3 support is offered at a cost of $199.99.
