Laowa Launches 12mm f/2.8 Lite Zero-D FF Lens
Venus Optics has released the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Lite Zero-D FF, an ultra-wide-angle lens developed for full-frame mirrorless systems. This new model builds upon the original Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D, which was noted for being among the widest non-fisheye lenses available for full-frame cameras. The Lite version retains the rectilinear optical design and 122-degree field of view while introducing a lighter build, autofocus functionality for select mounts, and various optical enhancements.
The updated lens structure comprises 16 elements in 9 groups, including four extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical components. According to the manufacturer, the redesigned optics offer improved sharpness across the frame and better control over chromatic aberration compared to the original model.
Weighing approximately 377g in the Sony E mount configuration, the Lite version represents a significant reduction in weight compared to its predecessor, which weighed 609g. The new design also includes a standard 72mm front filter thread, eliminating the need for a dedicated filter holder system.
The lens is capable of focusing as close as 14cm, and autofocus support is available for Sony E and Nikon Z mounts. In these versions, the lens includes a focus mode switch (MF/AF) but lacks a physical aperture ring. Canon RF and Leica L mounts are limited to manual focus, but do feature an aperture ring. Both manual and autofocus models share the same optical characteristics.

The lens is offered in two different aperture blade configurations. A 5-blade version, available for AF Sony E, AF Nikon Z, MF Canon RF and MF L mounts, produces a 10-point sunstar when stopped down. A 14-blade version, which yields smoother bokeh, is available only in manual focus for Sony E, Canon RF, Nikon Z and Leica L mounts.
