Samyang Adds 16mm and 85mm Lenses to Prima Series
Samyang has expanded its Prima series of compact autofocus lenses with the introduction of two new models: the AF 16mm f/2.8 P FE and the AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE. These new additions follow the release of the AF 35mm f/1.4 P FE, which was the first lens introduced in the Prima series: all three lenses are designed exclusively for Sony E-mount full-frame cameras and are also compatible with APS-C models, where they offer adjusted focal length equivalents.
Both lenses feature a minimalistic barrel design that includes an autofocus/manual focus switch, weather sealing rated at IP5 for dust resistance and a USB-C port located in the lens mount for firmware updates. They are also constructed from Samyang’s proprietary engineering plastic. A red ring around the mount is a consistent aesthetic feature across the series.
The AF 16mm f/2.8 P FE is an ultra-wide-angle prime lens weighing 207 grams and measuring 70.5mm in length. It offers a minimum focusing distance of 12 cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3 on full-frame. When used on an APS-C body, the effective focal length becomes 24mm, and magnification increases to 1:2. Optically, the lens includes eight elements arranged in seven groups, featuring one high-refractive index optic, three extra-low dispersion elements and one aspherical element. The aperture ranges from f/2.8 to f/22 via a seven-bladed diaphragm. Autofocus is driven by a linear STM motor.
The AF 85mm f/1.8 P FE, weighing 272 grams and measuring 71.5mm, is positioned as a lightweight portrait prime. Its optical formula consists of nine elements in eight groups, including one high-refractive index optic and three extra-low dispersion lenses. The aperture ranges from f/1.8 to f/22 using a nine-blade iris, and the lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.8 meters and a reproduction ratio of 0.12x. According to the manufacturer, it is optimized for smooth background separation and shallow depth of field, aided by the fast maximum aperture.
Both lenses are shipped with detachable lens hoods and maintain compact dimensions suitable for travel and general-purpose use. When mounted on APS-C Sony cameras, the 85mm lens yields a 127.5mm equivalent focal length, which may appeal to photographers looking for increased subject isolation.
The South Korean company has confirmed that these lenses will be sold under the Rokinon brand name in North America but will otherwise remain identical in design and function. The retail price for each model is set at $399 or £348, with availability scheduled for August 2025.
