Anders Petersen: Early Portraits

Anders Petersen, one of Sweden’s most distinguished photographers, presents Early Portraits, a compelling new collection featuring his previously unpublished works from 1967 to 1970. Developed during Petersen’s formative years under the mentorship of legendary photographer Christer Strömholm, this book offers a rare glimpse into the evolution of his unique visual language. Initially, Strömholm carefully marked a selection of Petersen’s early images with a ‘C,’ signifying his approval. Reflecting on these marked negatives years later, Petersen discovered that his genuine artistic voice emerged not from the approved images, but from those overlooked at the time. As Petersen himself notes, “These small, intense images initially felt disconnected from my identity. It was only upon revisiting my archives that I found photographs we had previously disregarded. Time allowed for a softer and more open interpretation, transforming my perception entirely. Few of the originally approved images made it into this collection.”In his afterword, esteemed photography critic Gerry Badger emphasizes the significance of Petersen’s work, stating, “These compelling portraits, taken across Paris, Genoa, Stockholm, and Hamburg, showcase why Anders Petersen is recognized among the finest portrait photographers of his generation. This publication solidifies his exceptional place in photographic history.”

About the Author

Anders Petersen (b. 1944, Stockholm) is a Swedish photographer known for his raw, emotionally charged black-and-white portraits. A student of Christer Strömholm in the late 1960s, Petersen developed a deeply personal documentary style rooted in intimacy, honesty, and social engagement.
He gained international recognition with Café Lehmitz (1978), a groundbreaking portrait series of marginalised individuals in a Hamburg bar. The work became iconic, notably when one image was featured on Tom Waits’ Rain Dogs album cover.
Throughout his career, Petersen has explored closed institutions and urban subcultures, creating acclaimed books such as Fängelse (1984), Rågång till kärleken (1991), and City Diary (2012). His visual diaries span cities from Paris to Naples, always marked by his intense human gaze.
He has published over 40 photobooks and exhibited worldwide. His work is held in major collections, including MoMA New York, Centre Pompidou, and Moderna Museet.
