Joshua Amirthasingh: Tales from the City

Joshua Amirthasingh’s photographs are rooted in storytelling, shaped by his memories of growing up in India and his fascination with the language of cinema. Tales from the City is both a visual diary and a dreamlike portrait of his adopted home, San Francisco.
Amirthasingh turns to the city’s rhythm and atmosphere to build his narratives. He lingers on fleeting pauses within the urban rush, where the warmth of late-afternoon sunlight casts a nostalgic glow and drifting fog transforms the familiar into something mysterious and otherworldly. Light and atmosphere become central figures in his work, amplifying the sense of reverie and adding depth to the stories he creates with his camera. The series invites viewers into this layered space—where memory, place, and imagination overlap—encouraging them to discover echoes of their own pasts.
The book is finely produced, printed in four colors on natural matte art paper and bound in cloth-covered boards. This first edition of Tales from the City, limited to 1,000 copies, is released in conjunction with the 2025 San Francisco Art Book Fair.

A portrait of Joshua Amirthasingh

About the Author

Joshua Amirthasingh weaves narratives shaped by memory and reflection. Drawing inspiration from Edward Hopper’s sense of composition, the vivid impressions of his childhood in India, and the language of cinema, he creates images that feel both intimate and timeless. Working with analog film, he embraces a slower, intentional practice—one that echoes the act of looking back and remembering.
In San Francisco, his adopted home, Amirthasingh gravitates toward moments of stillness within the city’s constant movement. The glow of golden hour and the city’s shifting fog become more than atmosphere; they emerge as central characters that guide the stories unfolding in his photographs. His work opens a dialogue between the ordinary and the unforeseen, inviting viewers to enter a space of contemplation and discover their own layers of memory within it.
