GoPro Introduces Max2 8K 360 Action Camera

GoPro has launched the Max2, its new 360-degree action camera and the first update to the Max in six years. The camera records what the company describes as “true” 8K spherical video, offering about 21% more resolution than competitors (such as the Insta360 X5 and DJI Osmo 360) and making it possible to reframe spherical footage into flat video with greater clarity. Still images are captured at 29 megapixels.

“Max2 is the world’s best, most durable 360 camera — with its market leading True 8K video resolution, superior colors and overall image quality, industry-leading six microphone audio performance and convenient twist-off replaceable glass lenses,” says GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman.

Inside, the Max2 uses two 1/2.3-inch sensors, a choice that keeps the design compact but limits performance in low light. It records in 10-bit color, supports GP-Log for flexible grading, and provides additional advanced tools through GoPro Labs, including higher bitrates and exposure controls. Video options range from 8K at 30 frames per second to 4K at 100 fps for slow motion, with single-lens capture available in 4K or 1080p. Multiple digital lens modes adjust the field of view, from the extreme Max HyperView to more natural linear settings. Shooting modes include 360 TimeWarp, Night Mode, and standard GoPro features like bursts and long exposures.

The audio system relies on six microphones with wind reduction, directional control in single-lens mode, and support for Bluetooth microphones such as AirPods. Ambisonic audio will be enabled with a software update.

Physically, the Max2 adopts a slimmer, more aerodynamic body that is waterproof to 5 meters. It features an Enduro battery optimized for cold conditions, built-in GPS, and replaceable water-repellent lenses that can be swapped without tools. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and USB-C, while wireless timecode synchronization allows coordinated editing with multiple cameras.

The American company released the camera alongside the Fluid Pro AI, a three-axis gimbal with subject tracking. The gimbal supports payloads up to 400 grams, works with GoPro cameras, smartphones and compact cameras, and integrates an LED fill light. It offers up to 18 hours of operation and can also function as a power bank.

The two products are now available, with GoPro Max2 is priced at $499.99 and the Fluid Pro AI gimbal listed at $229.99.
