Seagate Releases LaCie Rugged SSD4
American company Seagate has introduced the LaCie Rugged SSD4, the latest model in its long-running Rugged line of portable solid-state drives. The drive combines the series’ recognizable orange bumper and durable build with significantly increased transfer speeds.
The SSD caters to photographers, filmmakers and audio professionals requiring high-end data performance in different contexts. “Everyone can be a creator now, not just photo and video professionals,” says Avi Greengart, President and Lead Analyst at Techsponential, a technology research and advisory service. “In the age of AI and ultra-high-resolution formats like ProRes 4K, fast and durable local storage is more important than ever. Whether you’re editing on the go or archiving footage for future use, storage becomes a strategic asset in your creative workflow.”
Designed by Neil Poulton, the Rugged SSD4 incorporates 35% post-consumer recycled materials by weight and maintains the same compact dimensions as its predecessor, but adopts a brushed aluminum finish and a centered USB-C port. It carries an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance and is drop-tested to three meters. While not waterproof, it is designed to withstand splashes and impacts encountered during field use. Its orange bumper enhances durability without fully enclosing the device, in contrast to the more rugged LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5, which offers IP68 protection and faster transfer rates.
The Rugged SSD4 features a USB 40Gbps interface, supporting read speeds up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds up to 3,800 MB/s, and allows direct editing and fast file transfers across Mac, PC, iPad, and mobile platforms. It supports ProRes RAW and ProRes 4K recording on USB-C iPhones, including the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro series.
The drive also includes a two-months Adobe Creative Cloud Pro membership with access to Adobe Firefly. It comes with a three-year limited warranty and Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery Services.
The LaCie Rugged SSD4 is available now through the company’s authorized retailers in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities, priced at $134.99, $249.99, and $479.99, respectively.
