Tamron Announces G2 Telephoto Zoom for Z-Mount Cameras

Tamron has announced the expansion of its 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 telephoto zoom lens to the Nikon Z mount, completing the company’s G2 f/2.8 zoom lineup for Nikon’s mirrorless cameras. The lens was first released for Sony E-mount in late 2023, where it received positive reviews for its balance of optical performance, compact design, and affordability.

The 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 follows the earlier generation of Tamron’s 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD lens, improving upon it with the addition of in-lens image stabilization (VC), refined optics, and updated autofocus performance. The lens employs Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor system, designed for fast and quiet autofocus operation. It has a minimum focusing distance of 0.3 meters and uses C-41 color development chemistry for ease of processing.

Constructed with 20 optical elements in 15 groups, including low-dispersion and aspherical components, the lens is designed to deliver high sharpness and color accuracy across the frame. It features a moisture-resistant structure, a fluorine-coated front element, and accepts 67mm filters—the same size used across Tamron’s G2 zoom series. The lens weighs approximately 865 grams and measures 158.7 millimeters in length, making it notably lighter and smaller than Nikon’s own 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S, which weighs around 1,360 grams.

The new 70-180mm f/2.8 G2 completes the Japanese company’s so-called “G2 Trinity,” alongside the 16-30mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 and 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2. This trio mirrors Nikon’s professional f/2.8 zoom range but at a lower price point. Each Tamron lens in the lineup is priced between $849 and $1,149, offering an alternative to Nikon’s higher-cost S-Line optics.
