Viltrox Expands Its 85mm f/1.4 Pro Lens to Nikon Z Mount

Viltrox has expanded its Pro-series portrait lineup to the Nikon Z system with the introduction of the AF 85mm f/1.4 Pro Z, a lens that mirrors the design and performance characteristics of the version released earlier for Sony E mount. The new model enters a focal range already served by Nikon’s own 85mm f/1.8 S and the higher-end 85mm f/1.2 S, but fills the gap between them with a fast f/1.4 aperture at a comparatively low price.

The optical construction of the lens remains unchanged from the E-mount version: it uses 15 elements arranged in 11 groups, including extra-low dispersion, high-refractive, and ultra-anomalous elements intended to maintain sharpness and limit axial chromatic aberration. An 11-blade diaphragm produces a rounded blur profile, and the rendering characteristics are expected to match what has already been observed from the Sony model. The minimum focusing distance stays at 0.79 meters and the front accepts 77 mm filters.

Autofocus is driven by Viltrox’s dual HyperVCM motor system. The Chinese company states that the mechanism delivers fast and quiet focusing and is compatible with face- and eye-detection modes as well as subject-tracking functions in Nikon Z bodies. The lens also supports manual focus, retains internal focusing, and integrates a customizable function button, an AF/MF switch, and a click/declick control for the aperture ring.

The build is metal, with weather sealing around key points, and the lens includes a USB-C port on the mount for firmware updates. The Nikon Z version weighs 835 grams, roughly 35 grams more than its Sony counterpart, but remains similar in overall size. Handling and general behavior are expected to be consistent between both mounts.
