Think Tank Updates Shape Shifter Camera Backpack Line

American company Think Tank Photo has updated its Shape Shifter backpack line with two new models offering capacities of 25 liters and 37 liters. The redesigned backpacks are intended for photographers who need to carry a substantial amount of equipment while maintaining fast access and flexibility, with particular attention given to the working habits of photojournalists.

Both versions are built around a modular, divider-free internal layout that differs from conventional camera backpacks: instead of fixed or semi-rigid dividers, the Shape Shifter use removable padded pouches and adjustable hold-down straps to secure cameras and lenses. This approach allows users to arrange equipment vertically or horizontally and to reconfigure the interior depending on whether protection or speed of access is the priority. When rapid access is required, gear can be restrained with straps rather than enclosed in pouches. The front-side access panels provide direct reach to lenses up to the size of a 70–200mm f/2.8 without opening the main compartment.

The absence of a traditional divider system also enables the backpacks to compress significantly when not fully loaded. External compression straps allow unused sections of the bag to be reduced in volume, making the pack slimmer for travel or lighter assignments. Both models also include a dedicated rear laptop compartment, with support for a 15-inch laptop in the 25L version and a 16-inch laptop in the 37L version, along with internal mesh pockets for accessories.

In terms of external features, the two backpacks share the same functional design: each includes a removable rain cover, a tuck-away waist belt, an adjustable sternum strap, tripod and monopod attachment points, a luggage handle pass-through for airport travel, side pockets, and multiple small compartments for personal items. A hidden security pocket is integrated for valuables, and a business card holder is included for identification. The zippers are reinforced for durability, and the shoulder straps feature attachment points for accessories.

Capacity is the main distinction between the two versions. According to Think Tank, the 25L model is designed to carry one or two standard mirrorless or DSLR bodies, two to three lenses up to a 70–200mm f/2.8, and a laptop, while remaining compact enough to meet most carry-on requirements. The 37L version is intended for larger kits, including one or two gripped professional camera bodies and longer lenses, up to a 300mm f/2.8, alongside a larger laptop. When empty, both backpacks can be compressed to reduce bulk, with the 37L version weighing approximately 1.8 kilograms.

The Think Tank Shape Shifter 25L and 37L backpacks are available for purchase at prices of $299.75 and $329.75 respectively.
