Venus Optics Expands Laowa 90mm 2x Macro to Micro Four Thirds
Venus Optics has introduced a Micro Four Thirds version of its Laowa 90mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO lens, expanding compatibility beyond the full-frame mounts for which it was originally released in 2022. The lens was previously available for Canon RF, Nikon Z, Sony E, and L-Mount systems and with the addition of the Micro Four Thirds mount, it becomes accessible to OM System and Panasonic users who frequently employ the format for macro photography.
The optical design remains largely unchanged: the lens consists of 13 elements arranged in 10 groups, including three extra-low dispersion elements, and incorporates an apochromatic configuration intended to reduce both longitudinal and lateral chromatic aberrations. It offers a maximum magnification ratio of 2:1 and a minimum focusing distance of approximately 20.5 centimeters. On a Micro Four Thirds body, the 2x crop factor results in a field of view equivalent to a 180mm lens in full-frame terms, while the effective magnification relative to full-frame framing reaches 4:1.
The diaphragm uses nine blades and supports an aperture range from f/2.8 to f/22, but unlike some full-frame variants, it doesn’t feature manual aperture ring. It is manual focus and uses an internal focusing mechanism, so its physical length does not extend during operation. The Micro Four Thirds version includes electronic contacts that enable aperture control from the camera body and allow EXIF data transmission.
Physically, the lens weighs approximately 540 grams and measures about 115 millimeters in length, making it slightly more compact than certain full-frame mount versions. It accepts 67mm screw-in filters. The housing is constructed from metal, and no optical image stabilization is built into the lens.
