Light Lens Lab Announces 75mm f/2 SP-II for Leica M-Mount
Light Lens Lab has announced the development and production plans for its 75mm f/2 “SP-II” lens designed for Leica M-mount cameras.
First previewed in 2023, the 75mm f/2 “SP-II” is based on the optical concept of the Cooke Optics Speed Panchro Series II 75mm T2.2 cinema lens, originally produced in the mid-20th century by Taylor, Taylor & Hobson in Leicester, England. The Speed Panchro lenses were widely used in motion picture production from the 1930s through the 1950s and later gained renewed attention for their distinctive rendering characteristics. The “SP-II” designation in fact refers to “Speed Panchro II,” indicating the lens’ conceptual link to that historical optical design.
According to the manufacturer, the 75mm f/2 SP-II follows the same optical foundation as its existing 50mm f/2 SP-II: it employs a Double-Gaussian formula with achromatic and apochromatic elements, arranged in eight elements across five groups. The diaphragm consists of 12 blades and operates in half-stop increments from f/2 to f/22. The lens is manual focus, with a focusing range from 0.7 meters to infinity.
Wide open at f/2, the lens is described as producing smooth tonal transitions and rounded out-of-focus rendering. Also, when stopped down to f/2.8 and smaller apertures, resolution and contrast increase, resulting in a more neutral and higher-acuity image. The optical design supports an image circle large enough to cover sensors up to 44 × 33 mm, allowing adaptation beyond 35mm full-frame systems.
The lens is constructed from aluminum alloy and measures 73 mm in length with a diameter of 54 mm, weighing approximately 310 grams. It uses an E43 filter thread and incorporates an integrated lens hood, with compatibility for A46 clip-on hoods. All mechanical and optical components are designed, manufactured, and assembled in-house by Light Lens Lab.
The 75mm f/2 SP-II will be offered in two finishes: aluminum chrome at $749 and aluminum black paint at $799, excluding taxes and duties. The company has also indicated plans to expand the SP-II series with additional focal lengths, including 21mm, 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 90mm APO, and 135mm variants, with further announcements expected later in the year.

Pre-orders are scheduled to open on March 1, with manufacturing set to begin after the company completes fulfillment of its 35mm f/1.4 Aspherical “11873” lens orders, a process expected to conclude in March. Initial shipments of the 75mm lens are planned to start around March 20.
