Tamron Reveals 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD

Tamron has introduced the 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD, a full-frame zoom lens for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. The lens occupies an uncommon focal range, covering 35mm through 100mm with a constant f/2.8 aperture, and it is positioned as a more compact alternative to the company’s 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD, reducing both reach and maximum aperture at the wide end in exchange for lower weight and smaller dimensions.

While it does not extend as wide as a traditional 24-70mm zoom, the lens concentrates on mid-range coverage: is designed around focal lengths commonly associated with portrait and short telephoto work, including 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm. The Sony E-mount version measures 119.2mm in length and weighs 565 grams, while the Nikon Z-mount version is slightly larger at 121.5mm and 575 grams. Both versions use a 67mm front filter thread, consistent with several other Tamron lenses.

The optical construction consists of 15 elements arranged in 13 groups, including aspherical and low-dispersion elements intended to control aberrations and maintain image clarity across the zoom range. The aperture diaphragm uses nine blades and operates from f/2.8 to f/22. Autofocus is driven by Tamron’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor system, which is designed to provide fast and quiet operation for both still photography and video, and the lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.22 meters at 35mm and 0.65 meters at 100mm, allowing moderate close-up capability without being positioned as a dedicated macro lens.

The 35-100mm f/2.8 Di III VXD built features include moisture-resistant construction and a fluorine coating on the front element to help repel water and oil. A built-in connector port also allows direct integration with Tamron Lens Utility software for firmware updates and function customization via USB-C.
