Sigma Expands Art Line with 35mm f/1.4 DG II

Sigma has introduced the Sigma 35mm F1.4 DG II Art, a redesigned wide-angle prime for full-frame mirrorless cameras. Available in Sony E-mount and L-Mount, the lens replaces the 2021 35mm F1.4 DG DN Art and represents the latest evolution of Sigma’s 35mm f/1.4 Art series, which originated in the DSLR era and has since been reworked for mirrorless systems.

The optical design has been comprehensively revised. The lens comprises 15 elements arranged in 12 groups, compared to 15 elements in 11 groups in the previous mirrorless version. The construction includes four high-precision aspherical elements and two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements, a configuration Sigma states is intended to reduce axial chromatic aberration and other distortions commonly associated with fast-aperture lenses. The lens also introduces Sigma’s Advanced Amorphous Coating (AAC), a low-refractive-index layer designed to reduce internal reflections that can cause ghosting and flare. The minimum focusing distance is 28 cm, with a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:5.4.

Mechanically, the lens adopts a floating focus system, which contributes both to optical correction and to a reduction in size and weight. Autofocus is driven by Sigma’s dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) system, the same motor technology used in the 35mm F1.2 DG II Art. The dual-motor arrangement is designed to move the focus group quickly and with reduced operational noise. Sigma states that focus breathing has been minimized through adjustments to the focus group configuration and element geometry, a characteristic relevant for video use. The lens does not incorporate optical image stabilization.

The aperture range extends from f/1.4 to f/16 and is controlled by an 11-blade diaphragm designed to maintain a circular opening when stopped down. Refinement of the aspherical element surfaces is intended to reduce onion-ring artifacts in out-of-focus highlights. The barrel measures approximately 94–96 mm in length, depending on mount, with a diameter of around 73 mm and a 67 mm filter thread. Weight is approximately 525–530 grams, representing a reduction of about 20% compared to the previous model, while overall length has been reduced by roughly 14%.

The construction combines aluminum with TSC (Thermally Stable Composite) materials. Physically, the lens includes two AFL buttons positioned for access in both portrait and landscape orientations, a focus mode switch, and a manual aperture ring with click and de-click functionality. An aperture lock switch prevents unintended movement when set to the automatic position. The body features dust- and splash-resistant sealing, and the front element is treated with water- and oil-repellent coatings. A locking petal-shaped lens hood is included.
