Zeiss Extends Otus ML Series with 35mm f/1.4 Prime
Zeiss has announced the introduction of the Otus ML 35mm f/1.4, a manual-focus wide-angle prime for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens joins the existing Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 models, completing a three-lens set within the Otus ML series designed for Sony E, Canon RF, and Nikon Z mounts.
The Otus ML series traces its origin to the German company’s earlier Otus lenses for DSLR cameras, which included focal lengths such as 28mm, 55mm, 85mm, and 100mm. The new ML series reinterprets the concept for mirrorless systems with a revised optical design and reduced size compared to earlier Otus models. The Otus ML 35mm f/1.4’s focal length, the first 35mm lens in the Otus family, places it within the moderate wide-angle category, commonly associated with street, documentary, travel, and environmental portrait photography.
The Otus ML 35mm f/1.4 uses an aspherical Distagon optical design consisting of 15 elements arranged in 11 groups; the construction also includes two aspherical elements and multiple anomalous partial-dispersion glass elements intended to control distortion and chromatic aberration across the frame. Zeiss applies its T* anti-reflective coating to the optical surfaces to reduce internal reflections, flare, and ghosting.
The lens has an aperture range of f/1.4 to f/16 and uses a 10-blade diaphragm designed to maintain a rounded aperture shape. The minimum focusing distance is 0.3 meters, producing a maximum magnification ratio of approximately 1:5.7.
Focusing is entirely manual and relies on a fully mechanical helicoid rather than an electronic focus-by-wire system: the focus ring provides a rotation angle of approximately 257 degrees, allowing precise adjustment across the full focusing range. Each focus position corresponds directly to a fixed mechanical position of the ring, providing repeatable focus distances. The lens barrel also includes engraved distance and depth-of-field scales.
The lens body is constructed from metal and incorporates a knurled focus ring. The aperture ring operates with 1/3-stop detents and can be de-clicked using a supplied tool to allow continuous adjustment, a feature intended to support video recording. Electronic contacts are integrated into the mount to transmit EXIF information and enable camera-assisted functions, although both focusing and aperture control remain manual operations. The mount includes weather sealing, and internal seals protect against dust and moisture.

Physical dimensions vary slightly depending on mount. The lens has a maximum diameter of approximately 77 millimeters, while length ranges from about 101 millimeters for the Sony E-mount version to roughly 116 millimeters for the Canon RF version. Weight ranges from 698 grams for the E-mount variant to 717 grams for the RF version and 737 grams for the Nikon Z mount. The lens accepts 67 mm filters and is supplied with a reversible metal petal-shaped lens hood and a protective pouch.
The Zeiss Otus ML 35mm f/1.4 is scheduled to become available through authorized retailers in spring 2026. The recommended retail price is set at approximately $2,299 in the United States and €2,399 in Europe.
