Megadap Announces M2RF Leica M to Canon RF AF Adapter
Megadap has announced the M2RF, an adapter designed to allow Leica M-mount lenses to operate with autofocus on Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras, that the Hong-Kong based company claims to be the first in the world.
Leica M lenses are traditionally manual-focus optics designed for rangefinder cameras and typically do not contain electronic communication with the camera body. The M2RF adapter introduces autofocus by incorporating a motorized helicoid mechanism within the adapter itself: rather than relying on internal lens motors, the system physically moves the mounted lens forward and backward to adjust focus. This approach allows manual-focus Leica M lenses to achieve automated focusing when attached to compatible Canon RF cameras.
The adapter is designed to work with Canon’s Dual Pixel autofocus system. According to the manufacturer, camera-based features such as face detection, eye detection, subject tracking, and continuous autofocus can operate through the adapter when supported by the camera body.
Operational controls on the adapter include a switch that allows users to change between autofocus and manual focus modes and a tripod interface to improve stability during use with larger lenses or when mounted on support systems. It also features electronic contacts that transmit metadata for EXIF recording and allow certain camera interface functions related to aperture information.
The M2RF adapter is also described as compatible with stacked adapters, allowing additional mount adapters—such as those for other lens systems—to be used while maintaining autofocus functionality. Additional selectable modes are provided for macro and infinity focusing, intended to extend the focusing range of the helicoid mechanism in different shooting situations.
The Megadap M2RF adapter is expected to be released in May 2026. Pricing and final compatibility details have not yet been confirmed.
