DJI Reveales Avata 360 8K FPV Drone

Chinese company DJI has introduced the Avata 360, a drone designed to capture spherical video and still images using a dual-lens system: the device indeed combines 360-degree imaging with first-person-view (FPV) flight capabilities.

The Avata 360 uses two sensors that together provide an imaging area comparable to a one-inch type sensor. This configuration enables the capture of 360-degree video at up to 8K resolution at 60 frames per second, as well as still images with a resolution of up to 120 megapixels. Footage recorded in 360 mode can be reframed during post-production, allowing different viewing angles to be extracted from a single recording.

In addition to full 360 capture, the drone offers a single-lens mode, which functions more like a conventional forward-facing camera. In this configuration, video recording is limited to 4K at up to 60 frames per second. The system supports H.265 encoding and includes color profiles such as standard and logarithmic options for post-processing.

The drone incorporates DJI’s O4+ video transmission system, which provides a live feed at up to 1080p and is rated for transmission distances of up to 20 kilometers under optimal conditions. It is compatible with standard DJI remote controllers, including the RC 2, RC-N2, and RC-N3, as well as with FPV goggles and motion controllers for a more immersive control method. The system also supports automated tracking and subject-following features, as well as post-processing tools available through DJI’s software ecosystem.

Flight performance is rated at up to 23 minutes per battery charge. The drone weighs approximately 455 grams and includes integrated propeller guards. Safety features include omnidirectional obstacle sensing, supported by multiple sensors and a forward-facing LiDAR unit to assist in low-light conditions.

The Avata 360 includes 42GB of internal storage, which is sufficient for approximately 30 minutes of 8K 360-degree video. Additional storage can be added via a microSD card. File transfer is supported through Wi-Fi 6, with transfer speeds of up to 100 MB/s under optimal conditions.

The camera module is designed with replaceable front lens elements, allowing users to replace damaged components using a dedicated kit.

The Avata 360 is available in selected markets and offered for pre-order in others, with availability and pricing varying by region. As with some recent DJI products, official distribution is limited in certain countries, including the United States.
