Fujifilm Broadens Instax Wide 400 Appeal With Jet Black Finish

Fujifilm has introduced a jet black colorway for its Instax Wide 400 instant camera, nearly two years after the original sage green model launched in June 2024. The new finish is matte, absorbs light rather than reflecting it, and presents the camera in a register that reads as more deliberate and less casual than its predecessor. The Japanese company describes it as conveying a calm, refined impression suited to a range of settings, from outdoor gatherings to weddings and formal occasions — a noticeable departure from the tone of the original launch.

The black model is functionally identical to the green one. It shoots on wide format Instax film measuring 3.4 by 4.25 inches, more than double the print area of a standard Mini frame. Its retractable 95mm f/14 lens covers a field of view roughly equivalent to 35mm on a full-frame sensor, and exposure is handled automatically, with no manual control available and no option to disable the flash. Focus operates on a two-stage manual system: one setting for subjects between 0.9 and 3 meters, another from 3 meters to infinity; a close-up lens accessory can also reduce the minimum focus distance to approximately 40 centimeters. An integrated self-timer, instead, allows delays of up to ten seconds.

The built-in flash has a recovery time of seven seconds and an effective range between 0.9 and 3 meters, and the camera runs on four AA alkaline batteries, which yield roughly 100 shots before replacement. Development time from shutter press to a finished print in hand runs approximately 90 seconds.

The Fujifilm Instax Wide 400 in jet black is available at $174.95, the same price as the sage green version. A matching black carrying case is available separately at $22.50. Wide format Instax film is sold separately and is compatible with both versions without modification.
