Westcott Introduces Compact S18 Mini Flash
American company Westcott has introduced the S18 Mini Flash, a compact on-camera lighting unit positioned as a basic manual solution for photographers requiring a lightweight and low-cost alternative to larger flash systems. The device is designed with a simplified feature set and does not include any form of automatic exposure control, relying instead on fully manual operation.
The S18 delivers an output of 18 watt-seconds with a guide number of 16 at ISO 100, placing it above typical built-in camera flashes but below the performance of standard speedlights. Power can be adjusted across 19 levels, covering a range of seven stops in 0.3-stop increments. All adjustments must be made directly by the user, as the flash does not support TTL communication with the camera.
The unit uses a single-pin hot shoe, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of camera systems, although this also limits functionality to basic triggering. The flash head can tilt between -3° and 72°, allowing for direct or bounced light, but it does not support horizontal rotation. Recycle times range from approximately 0.01 to 2.5 seconds depending on the selected power level, and the maximum sync speed is listed at 1/250s. The flash also supports optical slave modes, enabling it to be triggered by other light sources in multi-flash setups.
Power is supplied by an integrated 3.7V 1250mAh battery, which can be recharged via USB-C. The battery is rated for up to 500 full-power flashes per charge, and charging can be performed while the unit is in use.
Physically, the S18 weighs around 100 grams and is constructed primarily from plastic. The package includes basic accessories such as color gels and a diffusion panel, allowing for limited modification of the light output.
The S18 Mini Flash is available at a price of approximately $40.
