Xiaomi Teases 17T and 17T Pro With Leica

Xiaomi announced the 17T and 17T Pro smartphones, both co-developed with Leica and carrying forward the camera-focused positioning that has defined the partnership between the two companies since it was formalized several years ago.

The two models share a triple rear camera configuration, though with differences in the primary sensor. The standard 17T is the smaller of the two, with a 6.56-inch display, and uses a 50-megapixel main camera built around a Type 1/1.55 sensor with an equivalent focal length of 23mm and an aperture of f/1.7. The 17T Pro has a 6.83-inch screen and a larger Type 1/1.31 sensor of the same resolution and focal length, also at f/1.7. Both devices use an optical design that Xiaomi and Leica describe as UltraPure, incorporating a hybrid Summilux lens structure. The Summilux designation is borrowed from Leica’s own lens naming conventions, where it traditionally denotes a fast prime with specific optical characteristics.

The telephoto camera is identical across both models and represents a new addition to the T series: a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto with 5x optical zoom and an equivalent focal length of 115mm at f/3. The sensor used here is smaller, at Type 1/2.76. Xiaomi states the lens is also capable of macro photography and supports what the company calls 10x optical-grade zoom, a term that encompasses the periscope mechanism’s effective range. Beyond that, both phones offer a 120x zoom mode that relies on AI processing, marketed as AI Ultra Zoom. The ultra-wide camera is also shared between the two models: a 12-megapixel unit with a Type 1/3.06 sensor, covering a 120-degree field of view equivalent to approximately 15mm.

On the software side, Xiaomi has introduced a feature called Leica Live Moment, available at all focal lengths on both devices: the function captures a brief video clip around each still image and uses AI to identify and extract what it determines to be the best frame from that sequence. The implementation is similar in concept to burst photography with automated selection. Both devices also include Leica-branded portrait processing and the option to apply Leica-style photo borders.

For video, both phones record 4K at 60 frames per second with HDR10+ support, with the 17T Pro adding 4K at 120 fps and 8K at 30 fps. The 17T runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra, while the 17T Pro uses a Dimensity 9500. Both run Android 16 and include Google Gemini.

The phones are scheduled to go on sale in June, and pricing starts at €749 for the 17T and €899 for the 17T Pro, representing a significant increase over the previous generation: the 15T Pro, launched in 2025, had a starting price of approximately $900. The 17T Pro’s European entry price converts to roughly $1,045 at current exchange rates.
