Insta360 Launches the Luna Ultra With Leica

Insta360 has announced the Luna Ultra, a dual-lens gimbal camera developed in collaboration with Leica. The device combines a three-axis mechanical stabilization system with a dual-lens configuration: the primary lens is a Leica Summicron paired with a Type 1 sensor — effectively a 1-inch sensor — capable of capturing 8K stills and video. The secondary lens is a telephoto unit with a Type 1/1.3 sensor and an f/2.0 aperture. Five focal lengths are available across the two cameras, with up to 6x lossless optical zoom and 12x digital zoom.

“This launch represents more than a new product announcement. It reflects the shared vision and long-term collaboration between Insta360 and Leica, combining optical heritage with a new generation of intelligent imaging technology.” — Marius Eschweiler, VP of Business Unit Mobile at Leica Camera AG.

The body weighs 200 grams, and a detachable, independent 2-inch OLED touchscreen functions as a monitor, controller, and remote framing tool with HD transmission up to 20 meters. An optional POV Head Tracker accessory also enables hands-free operation. The camera supports a magnetic filter and lens system; available accessories include a wide-angle lens expanding the field of view to 108 degrees, Black Mist diffusion filters, and ND filters.

Video capabilities include 8K at 30fps with Dolby Vision, 4K at up to 120fps, 2.7K at up to 120fps, and 1080p at up to 240fps, all encoded in H.265 at a maximum bitrate of 120Mbps. The camera supports 10-bit I-Log capture, Insta360’s own log color profile, with a claimed dynamic range of 14 stops. A PureVideo mode is included for low-light conditions, reducing noise up to 4K60fps. The color pipeline incorporates three Leica profiles — Natural, Vivid, and Chrome — alongside a set of cinematic filters and support for ACES (Academy Color Encoding System), a professional color management workflow used in film and broadcast production. Built-in timecode enables synchronization with other cameras and is compatible with editing applications including Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro. A QR Color Share function allows color settings to be transferred between devices.

Still photography supports 37-megapixel UltraPhotos and a 200-megapixel Scenic Panorama mode. A subject tracking system called Deep Track 5.0 supports Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking, and Smart Framing. Image processing across both video and stills relies on a Triple AI Chip integrated into the system.

For audio, the camera includes a built-in wind guard and is compatible with Insta360’s proprietary microphone systems in both single and dual-transmitter configurations. The 1,550mAh battery is rated for approximately four hours of use, with fast charging to 80% in around 23 minutes. Built-in storage is 47GB, with microSD support up to 1TB.
