Leica Teases a Smaller Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4

Leica has announced the Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH., a new version of its full-frame 50mm prime for the L-Mount system. The lens was unveiled alongside the SL3-P camera, and replaces the original Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. first introduced with the original Leica SL in 2016, which has since been discontinued.

The most significant aspect of the new lens is its physical reduction. The original measured considerably larger and weighed substantially more: the 2026 version measures 75.5mm in length and 74mm in diameter, weighing 584 grams. Leica attributes the size reduction to updated manufacturing processes, though no further technical detail has been provided. The result places the new lens among the most compact autofocus 50mm f/1.4 designs currently available across all lens mount systems — Leica itself claims it is the smallest. Notably, the new Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 is even smaller than the current Summicron-SL 50mm f/2 ASPH., which is itself a revised and reduced version of its predecessor introduced in 2023.

The optical formula comprises 11 elements in six groups, with two aspherical elements. The aperture diaphragm uses 11 blades covering a range from f/1.4 to f/16 — a reduction from the f/22 minimum of the original. Autofocus is driven by a voice-coil motor, and minimum focusing distance is 50 centimeters, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:7.6. The front filter thread is 67mm. As with other SL-series lenses, physical controls are minimal: a focus ring and an AF/MF switch are the only user-accessible elements on the barrel; all other parameters are managed through the camera body. The lens body is fully anodized aluminum and carries an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance. An AquaDura surface coating is applied to the front element.

The Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. is priced at $4,950 / £3,890, and its retail availability is expected before the end of 2026.
