DZOFilm Launches the Octopus II Lens Adapter
DZOFilm has announced the Octopus II, a mechanical lens adapter enabling the use of Arri PL-mount lenses on Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and L-Mount mirrorless cameras. The adapter is a direct successor to the original Octopus PL-E and addresses two of its predecessor’s main limitations: weight and internal clearance.
The most notable change is the weight reduction: the original Octopus weighed 390 grams, while the Octopus II weighs 190 grams, a reduction of approximately 50 percent. The internal cavity has also been enlarged by just over 7 percent, which DZOFilm states improves compatibility with a broader range of PL-mount lenses, including its own Arles, Arcana, Vespid, Pictor, and Gnosis series. A detachable 1/4″-20 threaded base is included for additional support when using heavier lenses. The adapter’s body is constructed from aluminum alloy and stainless steel and it is rated for 100,000 mount cycles and requires no calibration — focus infinity is maintained as marked on the lens.
The Octopus II is a purely mechanical adapter with no electronic communication between lens and camera body. This is the norm for PL-mount adapters, as the PL system was designed for dedicated cinema cameras and does not use the same electronic protocols as mirrorless stills systems.
The Octopus II is available for pre-order at $199, which is $70 less than the original Octopus at launch.
