TTArtisan Releases the AF 50mm f/1.8 Neo
TTArtisan has announced the AF 50mm f/1.8 Neo, a full-frame autofocus prime lens for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Leica L mounts. The lens sits at the lower end of the price spectrum for its category — well below Sony’s own FE 50mm f/1.8, Nikon’s Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4, and Panasonic’s Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 for L-mount.
The optical formula comprises 12 elements in eight groups, including two ED elements and four high-refractive-index elements. The aperture runs from f/1.8 to f/16 through a seven-blade diaphragm. Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor and supports eye- and subject-detection modes on compatible cameras, and minimum focusing distance is 0.48 meters. The front filter thread is 52mm, and the lens weighs between 156 and 167 grams depending on mount, with a length of 50 to 54 millimeters.
The most unusual aspect of the design is the absence of a focus ring. The lens is autofocus-only, with no provision for manual focus control. This is a rare approach in the mirrorless segment — the Viltrox AF 28mm f/4.5 Chip is another recent example — and TTArtisan states that the omission simplifies operation and contributes to the compact profile. It also has a practical consequence for the lens’s secondary feature: a set of interchangeable outer shells, which TTArtisan calls armor, designed to be 3D-printed by the user. Because there is no focus ring to interact with, the shells do not need to accommodate any moving parts, making the design straightforward. TTArtisan will make the print files available for download from its website for the E- and Z-mount versions; the L-mount version does not appear to support this feature. The company has shown several shell designs in its marketing material, including a textured set modeled after dragon scales.
The TTArtisan AF 50mm f/1.8 Neo is available now for $89.
