Tamron has announced the 12-20mm f/2.8 (Model A084), a new ultra-wide zoom lens for Sony E and Nikon Z full-frame mirrorless systems. The lens represents both an entirely new optical formula and a visible shift in how the Japanese company is positioning and naming its products: the previous naming convention, which included suffixes such as “Di III VXD,” has been dropped in favor of a simpler designation, and the visual identity of both the lens and its packaging has been updated with a darker matte finish and revised control ring textures. Tamron has also stated that the lens achieves G Master-level optical quality — a reference to Sony’s own professional lens line — a claim that, if substantiated by independent testing, would position it as a direct alternative to Sony’s own ultra-wide offerings at a lower price point.

The optical formula comprises 17 elements in 12 groups, including one XGM (eXpanded Glass Molded Aspherical) element, three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) elements, and additional specialist elements intended to suppress peripheral blurring, color fringing, and sagittal coma flare. The aperture diaphragm uses an unusual 12-blade design covering a range from f/2.8 to f/16. Autofocus is handled by Tamron’s VXD linear actuator motor, which the company has used across its recent high-performance zoom lenses. Minimum focusing distance is 18 cm at 12mm and 28 cm at 20mm, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.8 and 1:9.1 respectively. Tamron cites coma correction as a key design priority, which, alongside the fast aperture and ultra-wide coverage, positions the lens explicitly for astrophotography and interior architectural photography — two use cases where coma and chromatic aberration at wide apertures are typically the most limiting factors.

The physical design is notable for the density of its controls: the barrel carries a manual focus ring, a zoom ring, and — on the Nikon Z version — a customizable control ring, as well as an aperture de-click switch, a manual focus selector switch, two customizable buttons linked to a three-way selector switch, a zoom lock switch, and a manual focus locking switch. The overall impression is of a lens designed for users who prefer direct physical control over menu-based adjustments, which aligns with the professional and enthusiast market the new branding appears to target. The petal-style lens hood is permanently attached to the front of the barrel, which precludes the use of conventional screw-in front filters; rear gel-style cut-out filters are the designated alternative. The lens measures 119.3mm in length, weighs 570 grams, and is weather-sealed at multiple points, though Tamron has not assigned a specific IP rating.
