Panasonic has announced the Lumix S 20mm f/2.5, a compact ultra-wide prime for full-frame L-Mount cameras. The lens sits between the existing Lumix S 18mm f/1.8 and 24mm f/1.8 in terms of focal length, but its design philosophy aligns more closely with the Lumix S 40mm f/2 and the 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 — smaller, lighter lenses intended for photographers and video creators who prioritize portability over maximum aperture. The 20mm f/2.5 is in fact dimensionally almost identical to both: all three measure 40.9mm in length and weigh between 142 and 155 grams, and all accept 62mm front filters.

The optical formula comprises 11 elements in nine groups, with three aspherical elements and three ED glass elements, and a seven-blade aperture diaphragm. Minimum focusing distance is 18 centimeters, yielding a maximum magnification of 0.15x. The lens includes a customizable focus ring and a dedicated function button that, with the forthcoming Lumix S9 firmware update version 2.1, can be assigned to trigger Crop Zoom directly — a pairing that the Japanese company appears to have designed deliberately, given the S9’s positioning as a compact travel and street camera. The body is dust- and splash-resistant and available in black and silver.

The most immediate point of comparison in the L-Mount ecosystem is the Sigma 20mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary, released in 2022. That lens offers a slightly faster maximum aperture but weighs 370 grams, measures 72.4mm in length, and retails at $769. The Panasonic lens trades one third of a stop of light and some optical mass for a substantially more compact package and a lower entry point.

The Lumix S 20mm f/2.5 is expected to ship in October 2026 at $499. The Lumix S9 firmware update 2.1 is scheduled for the same month.
