Jordan Wolfson’s First Exhibition at Gagosian in New York
Gagosian presents a new exhibition by Jordan Wolfson at its 555 West 24th Street gallery in New York, marking the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery in the city.
The show brings together a group of new sculptures of uniform scale that incorporate color and black-and-white photographs drawn from online sources as well as personal and academic archives. Moving between art history, popular culture, and recurring elements of Wolfson’s own visual language, the works explore the ways images accumulate meaning through memory, circulation, and cultural association.
Throughout his practice, Wolfson has used existing imagery alongside technological and sculptural processes to examine the psychological tension between what is familiar and what feels disturbing or uncanny. In these new works, photographs become part of the physical structure of the sculptures, creating unexpected connections between found images, personal associations, and the wider visual culture from which they emerge.
About the Author
Jordan Wolfson was born in New York in 1980 and lives and works in Los Angeles. He received a BFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2003.
Working across sculpture, video, digital animation, installation, virtual reality, and robotics, Wolfson explores the psychological and emotional impact of images and technology. His work often combines familiar elements from popular culture and mass media with unsettling or uncanny situations, examining themes of identity, violence, desire, and contemporary social experience.
His work has been presented internationally at institutions including Tate Modern, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Kunsthaus Bregenz, the National Gallery of Australia, and Fondation Beyeler. In 2009 he received the Frieze Foundation’s Cartier Award.
