Godox Launches A2 Xenon Flash for Smartphones
Godox has introduced the A2, a compact external xenon flash designed for smartphone photography. Unlike the LED flashes integrated into most mobile devices, the A2 uses a conventional xenon flash tube, allowing it to produce a short burst of light similar to that generated by dedicated photographic flashes. The accessory attaches magnetically to the back of compatible smartphones, although it can also operate independently for off-camera lighting.
The A2 uses a magnetic mounting system compatible with MagSafe-style attachments, allowing it to be positioned directly behind an iPhone without a conventional camera bracket. However, its wireless design also permits the flash to be placed away from the smartphone, with Bluetooth communication supporting distances of up to approximately 15 meters. This makes it possible to illuminate subjects from different directions rather than relying exclusively on direct frontal lighting.
The flash has a guide number of 15, and Godox recommends positioning it within approximately two meters of the subject for effective illumination. Although its output is lower than that of many dedicated camera flashes, the xenon tube provides a more concentrated burst of light than a typical smartphone LED. The unit also incorporates a 3W bi-color continuous light, which can be used to assist composition and focusing in dark environments or provide illumination during video recording.
A rechargeable 500mAh battery powers the device, with Godox specifying approximately 400 flashes at full output. Alternatively, the continuous light can operate for up to one hour at maximum brightness. The A2 is designed as a portable accessory, with its compact dimensions allowing it to be carried separately from the smartphone when not in use.
Because smartphone camera applications generally do not support synchronization with external xenon flashes, the A2 requires Godox’s dedicated camera application. The software provides automatic exposure and flash control alongside a manual mode that allows users to adjust photographic settings independently. At launch, compatibility is limited to the iPhone 15 series and newer models running iOS 18 or later. Godox has also indicated that Android and HarmonyOS support is under development.

The company is offering additional magnetic accessories for positioning and modifying the light, while the standard package includes a diffusion dome and a carrying case. The A2 is available in four finishes: black, silver, light blue and dark red.
The Godox A2 is priced at $85 in the United States.
