Voigtländer Celebrates Skopar’s 100th Anniversary

Cosina has announced a commemorative version of the Voigtländer Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 VM, marking the 100th anniversary of the Skopar lens series. The new manual-focus prime is designed for Leica M-mount rangefinder cameras and retains the compact dimensions associated with the Color-Skopar range. Its introduction refers to the Skopar optical designation, first used in 1926, rather than the anniversary of the Voigtländer brand itself.

The anniversary model adopts a 35mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2.5, providing a moderately wide field of view suitable for general photography. Its optical design consists of seven elements arranged in five groups, while the aperture diaphragm uses ten blades. The lens is intended for full-frame 35mm cameras and supports mechanical rangefinder coupling for focusing through compatible Leica M bodies.

The lens can focus down to 0.7 meters, corresponding to the conventional minimum focusing distance of many Leica M rangefinder systems. Focus and aperture adjustments are entirely mechanical, with no electronic communication or autofocus mechanism. As a result, exposure and focusing depend on the controls provided by the camera and the lens itself.

The exterior design distinguishes the commemorative version from the standard Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5. Cosina has adopted a metal barrel with styling references to historical Voigtländer lenses, including revised engravings and a finish intended to reflect the appearance of earlier Skopar models. The anniversary designation is incorporated into the exterior, although the lens remains a contemporary optical product rather than a reproduction of a specific historical design.

The lens also uses a conventional screw-in filter system and is compatible with the Leica M bayonet mount. Through appropriate mechanical adapters, it can be mounted on several mirrorless camera systems, although rangefinder coupling is not retained on those bodies.

The Skopar name has been associated with several generations of Voigtländer photographic lenses, originally developed during the company’s German manufacturing period. Today, Voigtländer photographic lenses are produced by the Japanese manufacturer Cosina, which continues to use the historical brand name for its manual-focus lens ranges.

The Voigtländer Color-Skopar 35mm f/2.5 VM 100th Anniversary model is scheduled for release in November 2026. Japanese pricing has been announced at approximately ¥85,000, while international pricing and availability may vary by market.
