Leica Releases Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition
Leica has introduced the Q3 43 Formula 1 Edition, a special version of its full-frame compact camera developed in collaboration with Formula 1. Based on the existing Q3 43, the new model retains the same photographic specifications while incorporating different exterior materials, accessories and a dedicated image-processing profile.
The Formula 1 Edition was presented at the Leica Store and Gallery in Los Angeles, where the collaboration was introduced alongside an exhibition of 26 motorsport photographs by Italian photographer Callo Albanese. The event also involved Formula 1 presenter Ariana Bravo and former world champion Jenson Button.
The most visible changes concern the camera’s construction and finish: Leica has incorporated carbon-fiber elements into several components, including the wireless charging handgrip, the thumb rest and the soft-release shutter button. These parts are manufactured and tested in Germany and use a material commonly associated with motorsport engineering. The camera also features red accents on selected controls, while the top plate and lens cap display the Formula 1 logo.
Instead of the conventional leather-style covering, the body uses a non-slip Microvelour material inspired by the surfaces of Formula 1 steering wheels. A dedicated rope carrying strap bearing the Leica and Formula 1 logos completes the exterior modifications. The supplied wireless charging grip also incorporates a carbon-fiber shell and retains compatibility with Leica’s wireless charging system.
Internally, the camera remains unchanged from the standard Q3 43. It uses a 60-megapixel full-frame backside-illuminated CMOS sensor with Leica’s Triple Resolution Technology, allowing photographs to be recorded at 60, 36 or 18 megapixels. Image processing is handled by the Maestro IV processor, while the hybrid autofocus system combines phase detection, contrast detection and depth mapping.
