Sigma Teases 50mm f/1.4 CL DG Contemporary Lens

Sigma has announced the 50mm f/1.4 CL DG Contemporary, a compact autofocus prime lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens introduces the CL designation within Sigma’s I series, combining a conventional metal construction with an optical design that prioritizes rendering characteristics rather than maximum sharpness. It will be available for Sony E and L-Mount cameras.

Unlike the company’s 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art, which is designed to deliver high resolution across the frame, the new CL model deliberately retains certain optical aberrations. According to the Japanese company, these have been controlled through optical simulations to produce softer textures, gradual tonal transitions and a less uniform rendering of out-of-focus areas. The effect is particularly noticeable at the maximum f/1.4 aperture, where the lens is intended to provide a more traditional photographic appearance. However, the resulting differences in sharpness and contrast will require independent testing.

The optical construction consists of nine elements arranged in six groups, including three aspherical elements and one FLD low-dispersion element. The aperture ranges from f/1.4 to f/16 and uses a 14-blade rounded diaphragm. Minimum focusing distance is 45 centimeters, while the maximum reproduction ratio is 1:6.8.

To reduce the dimensions of the lens, Sigma has adopted a whole-lens extension focusing mechanism rather than a conventional internal focusing system. This is operated by a newly developed Rotary Direct Drive (RDD) autofocus actuator, which arranges electromagnetic components in a circular configuration around the optical assembly. The mechanism is designed to provide sufficient torque to move the complete focusing group without substantially increasing the diameter of the barrel.

The focusing system also allows immediate manual intervention. Turning the focus ring temporarily overrides autofocus operation, eliminating the need to select a separate manual focusing mode. However, the movement of the optical assembly may make the mechanism less suitable for certain continuous autofocus applications, particularly during video recording.

The lens retains several characteristics of Sigma’s existing I series, including an all-metal barrel, knurled aperture and focusing rings, and a magnetic metal lens cap. It also incorporates a focusing distance scale and a depth-of-field scale, allowing photographers to check focusing parameters directly on the lens. Its construction is resistant to dust and splashes, while the front element has a water- and oil-repellent coating.

The L-Mount version measures 64.7mm in diameter and 54mm in length, while the Sony E-mount version is slightly longer at 56mm. Both weigh approximately 375 grams and accept 52mm screw-in filters. By comparison, Sigma’s 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art weighs approximately 670 grams, making the CL model substantially lighter. The new lens is offered in black for both mounts, with an additional silver finish available for L-Mount.

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 CL DG Contemporary is scheduled for release in early spring 2027. The company has not yet announced an exact availability date or retail pricing.
