Brian Lloyd Duckett: A Street Photography Manifesto

What makes a compelling street photograph more than just a picture taken on the street? And how does a photographer develop a style that feels personal and recognisable?

In A Street Photography Manifesto, photographer, educator and author Brian Lloyd Duckett explores these questions through the practical and creative challenges of the genre. Street photography can be frustrating and intimidating, but learning to navigate that uncertainty is part of what makes it rewarding. Drawing on years of photographing and teaching, Duckett encourages readers to move beyond familiar formulas and think more carefully about what they see, why they photograph it and what their images convey.

Written for beginners and experienced photographers alike, the book combines practical instruction with a call to question habits and push beyond comfortable territory. Its three sections—“Preparing to Shoot,” “Shooting the Streets” and “After the Shoot”—follow the process from preparation to presenting the finished work. Advice on choosing and mastering equipment sits alongside guidance on developing a street photographer’s mindset, establishing routines, making plans and setting meaningful goals.

Confidence receives particular attention, with ten steps designed to help photographers overcome hesitation when working in public. Duckett also explores composition, the ethics of photographing others and the gradual development of a personal aesthetic. He examines common mistakes, considers when photographic rules help and when they become restrictive, and explains how individual observations can develop into sustained, meaningful projects.

The discussion extends to getting work noticed and building a reputation, recognising that sharing photographs is another part of a photographer’s practice. Throughout, the emphasis is on making thoughtful choices and finding an approach that reflects the person behind the camera.

Ten creative challenges turn these ideas into exercises, encouraging readers to experiment, tackle creative blocks and keep working when inspiration fades. Direct and practical, A Street Photography Manifesto invites photographers to look beyond predictable street scenes and make images shaped by their own curiosity, experience and sense of connection with everyday life.
