7Artisans Releases AF 40mm f/2.5 FE Lens
Chinese manufacturer 7Artisans has introduced the AF 40mm f/2.5 FE, a compact autofocus prime designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens is part of the company’s Lite Series, a product line intended to prioritize small size and low weight while maintaining compatibility with full-frame sensors.
The optical design consists of seven elements arranged in six groups. A nine-blade diaphragm controls the aperture, which ranges from f/2.5 to f/16. The lens has a focal length of 40mm, providing a field of view of approximately 56.1 degrees, positioned between the traditional 35mm and 50mm perspectives.
The minimum focusing distance is 0.4 meters, producing moderate close-up capability suitable for general photography, and autofocus is driven by an STM stepping motor designed to provide quiet and continuous operation. On compatible cameras, the system supports functions such as face and eye detection, but the lens does not include optical image stabilization.
Physically, the lens is designed to be compact and lightweight. The Sony E-mount version weighs approximately 90 grams and measures about 63 millimeters in diameter and 40 millimeters in length, placing it close to pancake-style dimensions.
The lens body uses a plastic barrel combined with a metal mount, and the lens accepts 46 mm filters. It incorporates several physical controls, including a clicked aperture ring with one-third-stop increments and a dedicated switch for changing between autofocus and manual focus. A customizable function button is also integrated into the barrel. A USB-C port is included to allow firmware updates.
