Canon Unveils EOS R6 Mark III

Japanese company Canon has unveiled the EOS R6 Mark III, a new full-frame mirrorless camera designed as a successor to the EOS R6 Mark II and as a convergence point between the company’s stills-focused R series and its Cinema EOS lineup. The camera is built around a newly developed 32.5-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, previously deployed in the EOS C50, and paired with the DIGIC X processor, thus raising resolution by more than 30% over the previous generation while preserving high capture speeds.

Physically, the EOS R6 Mark III closely follows the R6 Mark II, including the same 3.69-million-dot electronic viewfinder and fully articulating rear touchscreen. The camera adds a CFexpress Type B card slot alongside an SD UHS-II slot for faster media handling and a larger image buffer. It uses Canon’s updated LP-E6P battery and features the multifunction shoe introduced across the EOS R lineup, enabling accessory connectivity without cables. The device also includes improved wired/wireless transfer options, USB streaming support without drivers, and full weather sealing.

Autofocus performance sees a notable refinement through Canon’s updated Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, covering the entire frame and offering expanded subject recognition, including people, animals, vehicles, and helmets. Stills shooting reaches 40 fps with the electronic shutter and 12 fps mechanically, along with a pre-shoot buffer capable of capturing up to 20 frames before the shutter press is fully registered. The in-body stabilization system compensates up to 8.5 stops at the center and 7.5 stops at the edges.

Video functionality represents one of the primary shifts compared to earlier models. The EOS R6 Mark III supports 7K internal RAW Light recording up to 60p, 7K 30p Open Gate, 4K up to 120p, and Full HD up to 180p. Oversampling from the 7K sensor area is employed to improve 4K sharpness and color fidelity while reducing noise and moiré. Canon Log 2 and Log 3, waveform monitoring, proxy creation, metadata tagging, and four-channel audio support align the camera more closely with Canon’s cinema-oriented systems. A full-size HDMI Type-A port enables 7K ProRes RAW recording to external devices.

Due to the compact, weather-sealed construction and the absence of active cooling, thermal limitations apply in the highest-demand modes. Canon estimates approximately 23 minutes of continuous 7K RAW 60p recording at standard room temperature, with longer durations in lower-resolution formats. These restrictions indicate that the camera remains primarily a stills-hybrid system, rather than a replacement for purpose-built cinema cameras such as the EOS C50.

The Canon EOS R6 Mark III will be priced at €2,999 in Europe or $2,799 in the United States for the body-only configuration, with kit bundles including RF 24–105mm lenses available at increased pricing. Availability is expected within the month, with preorders already open.
