Cinelux Releases B4 Mount Adapter for RED DSMC Cameras

British company CINELUX has released a B4 Mount Adapter designed to allow B4 broadcast lenses to be used with RED DSMC1 and DSMC2 cameras, excluding the Raven model. The adapter operates in conjunction with the Blackmagic B4 mount system and enables compatibility between B4 lenses and RED’s single-sensor cameras, employing the optical correction of Blackmagic’s B4 adapter to align the image output of B4 lenses with RED’s sensor format, thus eliminating the need for larger and more costly expansion optics that often result in significant light loss and heavy oversampling.

The adapter is calibrated by default for a 0.5mm shim, consistent with the shim included with the Blackmagic B4 mount. However, the adapter can still function without a shim, provided that back focus is adjusted manually on the lens. When used with Blackmagic’s optical adapter, the system can retain features such as a wide zoom range, fast T-stops and parfocal operation, while maintaining the original image circle of the lens for improved sharpness and image quality.

Recording modes from 1080p to 3K are supported, matching the native optical range of most B4 lenses. On RED’s Gemini sensor, for example, it is possible to record at frame rates up to 240fps without applying a sensor crop. The system introduces approximately 1/3 stop of light loss, which is significantly lower than the up to 3 stops typically associated with conventional B4-to-PL adapters, offering advantages in low-light conditions and when shooting with the lens stopped down.

The adapter is now available and is priced at £395.00.
