DJI Enters the 360 Camera Market with the Osmo 360
Chinese company DJI has entered the 360-degree camera market with the release of the Osmo 360, a dual-lens action camera designed to capture immersive panoramic footage and high-resolution stills whose technical features aim at competing directly with established market leaders like Insta360.
“With the Osmo 360, DJI is challenging the status quo of the 360 camera market,” said Christina Zhang, Senior Director of Corporate Strategy at DJI. “We are revolutionizing panoramic innovation by leveraging DJI’s long history of innovation in creative camera technology. With each technological breakthrough, from 1-inch 360° imaging with industry-first square HDR sensor, to outstanding low-light performance, we aim to change what’s possible in a 360 camera.”
The Osmo 360 is equipped with two newly developed 1/1.1-inch square CMOS sensors, each coupled with an f/1.9 lens. These sensors collectively offer a total image area comparable to a Type 1 sensor but with increased efficiency, minimizing pixel waste during 360-degree capture. The sensor configuration supports up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range and incorporates 2.4μm pixels to enhance low-light performance and reduce noise.
From a resolution perspective, the Osmo 360 is capable of recording up to 8K resolution at 50 frames per second in panoramic video mode, or 6K at 60fps and 4K at 100fps. In single-lens mode, it records 5K video at up to 60fps with a 155° field of view or 4K video at up to 120fps with a 170° ultra-wide angle. Users can also switch between the front and rear lenses without interrupting recording. For still photography, the camera can capture 120MP 360-degree images.
Video files are recorded at a maximum bitrate of 170Mbps and saved in MP4 (HEVC) or DJI’s proprietary OSV format for post-processing. The camera features 105GB of internal storage and supports microSDXC cards up to 1TB.
The Osmo 360 features an IP68-rated waterproof housing and is operable at depths of up to 10 meters, even though it is not recommended for prolonged underwater use due to potential distortion caused by the fisheye lenses. It can also record continuously in temperatures as low as -20°C. The device includes a 2.0-inch 800-nit touchscreen and can be operated using physical buttons, the DJI Mimo mobile app or via voice and gesture control. Overall, the camera weighs 183 grams and shares battery and mounting compatibility with the Osmo Action 5 Pro, including the same 1950mAh battery, which supports up to 100 minutes of continuous 8K 30fps recording. This duration can be extended to 180 minutes with the Battery Extension Rod accessory. A 50% charge is achievable in 12 minutes using fast charging.
Audio functionality includes four built-in microphones and support for DJI Mic 2 and Mic Mini systems via OsmoAudio Direct, allowing for direct dual-microphone input without a receiver. The camera can also back up ambient audio during shooting.
Additional features include invisible selfie stick capture, intelligent subject tracking (people, vehicles, animals), support for Apple Watch and Garmin telemetry integration, and a variety of shooting modes such as SuperNight, Hyperlapse, timelapse and pre-recording. Both 360-degree and flat video modes support 10-bit color depth and D-Log M color profile for extended dynamic range and flexibility in post-production. It is also compatible with DJI’s RockSteady 3.0 and HorizonSteady stabilization systems.
The camera mounts using DJI’s magnetic quick-release system and includes a standard 1/4-20” thread. Accessories include multiple selfie stick variations, quick-release mounts, motorcycle and bike mounts, carrying bags and vlog-specific kits. Editing can be done through the DJI Mimo app, DJI Studio desktop software, or via a dedicated Adobe Premiere plugin. Wireless data transfer is supported at up to 90MB/s, while USB-C 3.1 allows for up to 600MB/s.
The Osmo 360 is currently available outside the United States. In Europe, the Standard Combo is priced at approximately €480 and the Adventure Combo at €630. In Canada, prices are set at $430 and $580 CAD respectively. In the U.S., official DJI sales are not currently available, and there is no confirmed release date. Other kit options, such as Vlog and Travel editions, are also offered in various markets.
