DJI Unveils Osmo Action 6 With Variable Aperture

DJI has introduced the Osmo Action 6, an action camera built around a new square Type 1/1.1 CMOS sensor and notable for being the first device of its type to use a variable aperture. The lens indeed shifts between f/2.0 and f/4.0, a range that departs from the fixed-aperture designs typical in the category, and is intended to provide more control over depth of field and exposure. In Auto mode, the camera regulates the aperture between its minimum and maximum values, while additional preset modes apply fixed settings, including a starburst effect at f/4.0. The minimum focus distance can also be shortened from 35 to 11 centimeters, with a Macro Lens sold separately.

The Osmo Action 6 camera’s square sensor layout, which covers 98 mm² and uses 2.4 μm pixels, allows recording in 4:3, 16:9, and a 4K Custom format that captures the full sensor for later reframing. DJI states that the sensor offers up to 13.5 stops of dynamic range. The camera records up to 4K/120 in 4:3, supports 10-bit D-Log M, and features a SuperNight mode for low-light recording, though capped at 4K/60. Frame interpolation is used to create 32× slow-motion footage, producing the equivalent of 960 fps output from native 1080p240 capture. The camera records in HEVC at bitrates up to 120 Mbps and captures still photos at 38 megapixels.

Electronic stabilization is carried over from earlier models, including RockSteady and horizon-leveling modes. HorizonSteady now operates in 4K, and HorizonBalancing supports correction within ±45 degrees. The camera also includes subject detection, tracking, and automated centering, using the processor to adjust framing and composition. Additional modes cover portrait-oriented capture, various built-in tone profiles, and a new system for maintaining skin-tone consistency.

Dual OLED touchscreens provide control from the front and rear, with the rear panel reaching 1000 nits peak brightness. Both displays have hydrophobic coatings to enable operation in wet conditions. The camera’s body is waterproof to 20 meters without a case and includes a pressure gauge for depth readout; an optional housing extends the rating to 60 meters. Operation is possible down to -20°C, and the latest battery reaches 80 percent charge in around 22 minutes.

The camera integrates with the OsmoAudio ecosystem, connecting natively to DJI’s wireless microphones and supporting third-party Bluetooth headsets. Three built-in microphones supply ambient and voice capture with wind-noise reduction.

The Osmo Action 6 contains 50 GB of internal storage and supports microSD expansion. Wi-Fi 6 and USB-C support allow high-speed transfers, external monitoring, live streaming, and multi-camera control. Additional accessories such as the Macro Lens, FOV Boost Lens, dive housing, and mounting systems are available separately.

DJI is offering the Osmo Action 6 in two configurations. The Standard Combo includes the camera and basic mounting and charging accessories, while the Adventure Combo adds extra batteries, a multifunctional battery case, and an extension rod. Prices begin at €379 in Europe, with similar pricing across other markets where the camera is officially distributed.
