Insta360 Releases X4 Air 360 Camera
Insta360 has introduced the X4 Air, a compact and lightweight addition to its 360-degree action camera lineup, arriving shortly after the release of the X5. Positioned below the flagship model, it retains 8K 360-degree video recording while reducing size, weight, and cost.
The X4 Air records 8K 360° video at up to 30 fps and 1080p slow motion at 120 fps when using a single lens. However, its 4K video is limited to 50 fps, whereas the X4 and X5 can reach up to 100 fps. Still image capabilities are reduced to 29 MP, far below the 72 MP resolution of the higher-end models. Despite these limitations, the camera employs larger 1/1.8-inch sensors than the X4, a change that according to the company improves detail and color reproduction. The sensors remain smaller than the 1/1.28-inch units inside the X5, affecting low-light performance.
The Chinese company has focused on weight and portability: the X4 Air weighs 165 g and measures 113 mm in length, making it around 38 g lighter and shorter than the X5. The battery capacity is also reduced, delivering up to 88 minutes of 8K 30 fps recording instead of 93 minutes. The camera, however, uses a removable lens guard and supports replaceable lenses, extending durability and offering a key advantage for field use. It is waterproof down to 15 m (49 ft) without external housing and includes voice and gesture controls, horizon leveling, and stabilization technology.
Software updates include the introduction of AdaptiveTone, which analyzes exposure from each lens independently to balance brightness and color across the full 360-degree field. Active HDR is now supported at full 8K resolution, rather than the lower limits found on previous models. A Portrait mode adjusts exposure and color to improve rendering of faces in 360° scenes. AI-driven features within the Insta360 app also support automated reframing, editing, and synchronization of footage with music. Cloud backup via Insta360+ is included for the first year with 200 GB of storage.
The X4 Air is compatible with a broad ecosystem of mounts and accessories intended for cycling, action sports, and general content creation. It also supports integration with devices from Apple, Garmin, and Huawei to attach motion and GPS data to recorded clips.
The Insta360 X4 Air is available in Graphite Black and Arctic White in a Standard Bundle priced at $399.99 and a Starter Bundle with additional accessories for $439.99. Wider regional availability, including North America, is planned following the initial launch.
