Stateside is Jackie Nickerson’s expansive yet discontinuous visual journal, shaped by ten years of living and working throughout the United States. Moving from Chicago streets to military bases in Hawaii, from the open terrains of Utah to the vertical density of New York, Nickerson photographed with whatever tool was available—medium format cameras, 35mm film, compact cameras, or an iPhone—capturing unfiltered impressions of a nation in an unstable and uncertain moment.

Rather than anchoring the work to specific places, her attention gravitates toward recurring visual elements, suggesting that these images might belong almost anywhere in the country. Chain-link fences, basketball courts, suburban homes, classrooms, gas stations, even naval vessels recur as signs of repetition and uniformity, reflecting the utilitarian logic underpinning America’s economic and social structures.

In contrast to classic photobooks that map America as both territory and concept—most notably Robert Frank’s The Americans or Joel Sternfeld’s American Prospects—Stateside resists the idea of the singular, conclusive image. Nickerson instead printed her photographs at a large scale, arranged them in overlapping layers across her studio wall, and then photographed the installation itself. This process generates a dense, evolving visual flow, offering a layered and unsettled portrait of contemporary America.
