Leica Expands M-Lens Lineup with New Finishes
Leica has expanded its M-mount lens lineup with new cosmetic variants of four established primes, introducing three lenses in the brand’s olive-green Safari finish and one in a glossy black paint version. The updates affect only the exterior appearance, while optical design and mechanical construction remain unchanged.
The Safari variants include the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH., the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH., and the Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. All three feature a matte olive-green body, a silver-chrome brass focus tab, a red distance scale in feet, and a white scale in meters. Such details mirror previous Leica Safari editions, a design line that dates back to the late 1970s and was most recently extended to the M11-P Safari body. The German company states that these lenses incorporate the same close-focus refinements found in current production M primes, but are otherwise identical to their standard black and silver counterparts. The focal lengths continue to serve their established roles within the system, with 28mm positioned as a compact wide angle, 35mm as a general-purpose reportage lens, and 50mm as a standard option.
Alongside the Safari releases, Leica has introduced a glossy black paint version of the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Classic. This lens was previously available only in silver and is part of Leica’s Classic line. The black paint finish is intended to wear over time, gradually revealing the underlying brass, a characteristic Leica has historically embraced in both cameras and lenses. The lens ships with a matching round lens hood finished in the same glossy black paint.
Pricing reflects the premium positioning of these variants: the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Safari is priced at $6,795, while the Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 ASPH. Safari costs $5,495. Both are available immediately. The Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH. Safari instead is priced at $5,995 and is scheduled to ship on February 12, 2026. The Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 Classic in glossy black paint is available now for $4,595, representing a modest increase over the silver version.
