Leica Launches 28–70mm f/2.8 Zoom for L-Mount SL System
Leica has introduced the Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70mm f/2.8 ASPH, a standard zoom lens designed for L-mount cameras within the SL system. The lens is currently the most compact and lightweight zoom available in Leica’s SL lineup. It features a constant f/2.8 aperture and is constructed from 16 optical elements in 12 groups, including three aspherical elements, and offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.19 meters at 28mm and 0.38 meters at 70mm.
Although Leica has not confirmed a direct connection, the optical design appears to be similar to that of Sigma’s 28–70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary lens, released in 2021. Despite this similarity, the two lenses differ in mechanical construction and MTF chart performance. Notably, the Leica lens is heavier, likely due to its full metal housing, which contributes to improved durability and environmental protection. Leica states that the construction protects against dust and splash water, although no IP rating has been specified. In comparison, the Sigma counterpart is weather-sealed only at the lens mount.
Physically, the lens measures approximately 4 inches in length and weighs around 570 grams, which is lighter and more compact than Leica’s existing Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70mm f/2.8 lens. It uses a 67mm filter thread, matching the size used by Leica’s APO-Summicron-SL prime lenses.
The lens includes dual control rings for zoom and focus adjustment and is designed for general photographic use, covering a focal range suitable for wide-angle to portrait-length shooting. Leica notes that the autofocus system is fast and quiet, and that special lens coatings are applied to optimize color rendition, contrast and to reduce reflections. An Aqua-Dura hydrophobic coating is used on both the front and rear elements to assist with shooting in adverse weather.
