Lumix Teases ZS300 Compact Camera
Japanese company Panasonic has announced the Lumix ZS300, a compact travel camera positioned as the successor to the Lumix ZS200 released in 2018. The new model maintains much of the same hardware and overall design approach, with only limited changes compared to its predecessor.
The camera is built around a 20.1-megapixel one-inch type BSI CMOS sensor paired with a fixed Leica-branded zoom lens offering a 24–360mm equivalent focal range. The lens provides a 15x optical zoom with a variable aperture of f/3.3 to f/6.4, allowing coverage from wide-angle to telephoto within a single compact body. Optical construction and imaging pipeline remain unchanged from the previous generation.
One of the most notable differences is the removal of the electronic viewfinder: the ZS200 included a 2.33-million-dot EVF, while the ZS300 relies solely on its rear display for composition. The rear screen appears to be similar to the one used in later revisions of the ZS200, with a fixed design and touch functionality.
Another change is the transition from micro-USB to USB-C for charging and data transfer. The camera supports charging over USB but does not allow continuous power delivery during operation. Wireless connectivity remains available through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for image transfer and remote control via a mobile application.
Performance characteristics are largely consistent with the earlier model: the camera supports continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second at full resolution, as well as a 4K Photo mode that captures 8-megapixel frames at 30 frames per second. Video recording is available in 4K at up to 30 frames per second and Full HD at higher frame rates. A macro mode allows focusing at distances as close as approximately three centimeters at the wide end of the lens.
Image stabilization is handled through a five-axis hybrid optical system designed to reduce camera shake during handheld shooting, particularly at longer focal lengths. The camera records both JPEG and RAW files and includes a range of built-in filters and exposure controls. ISO sensitivity ranges from 125 to 12800.
Physically, the camera remains compact and pocketable, with dimensions and weight similar to its predecessor. It includes a built-in flash, a micro HDMI output, and a single SD card slot compatible with UHS-I media.
The Lumix ZS300 is expected to be available in black and silver finishes, with pre-orders already open. Pricing is set at approximately $899, representing an increase compared to the launch price of the ZS200.
