Module 8 Announces The MOOD Hypnotic Tuner for Sony E-mount

Switzerland-based company Module 8 has introduced the MOOD Hypnotic, described as the first optical tuner designed specifically for Sony E-mount cameras and lenses. The device functions as a Sony E-mount to Sony E-mount adapter containing optical elements that alter the spatial frequency response of attached lenses: it produces radial bokeh distortion, progressive edge blur, and geometric warping, while adding a 1.3x crop factor. Full electronic communication between camera and lens is preserved, including autofocus, aperture control, and stabilization coordination.

Module 8 positions the MOOD system as an alternative to traditional diffusion or mist filters, claiming that it does not simply soften contrast uniformly. Instead, it modifies how lenses resolve different spatial frequencies, an approach intended to counter the highly corrected, “clinical” rendering of modern optics. The Hypnotic version produces a strong visual effect characterized by swirling out-of-focus highlights, increased blur toward the frame edges, and mild geometric distortion that can convey a sense of motion even in static images.

As mentioned, the optical group inside the adapter introduces a mandatory 1.3x crop: on full-frame cameras, this reduces the effective field of view to roughly that of APS-C. Rolling-shutter behavior and breathing characteristics remain broadly governed by the attached lens, though the optical alterations may intensify visible breathing in some cases. Unlike Module 8’s variable EF and PL mount tuners, the Sony E-mount version is fixed in strength and cannot be adjusted.

The tuner is compatible with the full Sony E-mount system, from APS-C models to Alpha bodies, FX-series cinema cameras, and other E-mount cinema systems. It supports first-party Sony lenses as well as third-party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, and others. The company designed the effect to be pronounced even on inexpensive kit zooms, ensuring consistent character across a wide range of lenses, allowing users to apply a uniform visual signature to an entire lens set without purchasing multiple specialty or vintage lenses. Because the modification interacts with the optical design of each lens, high-resolution lenses such as Sony’s G Master series tend to show more noticeable changes than older or optically simpler designs.

Module 8 markets the MOOD Hypnotic as a way to achieve a look reminiscent of deliberately aberrated optics, but with the advantage of retaining autofocus and electronic integration. International buyers should note that VAT and import duties are not included in the listed price and will be applied upon delivery according to local regulations.

Pre-orders begin on November 15 at $299 for early buyers, shifting to $399 once the introductory period ends. Shipments are planned for January 2026, with the date dependent on production volume.
