More is More: Reinventing Photography Beyond the Frame

This exhibition explores how artists from the mid-1960s through the 1980s radically expanded the possibilities of photography. Rather than treating the photograph as a single, finished object, they fragmented, layered, and multiplied images, challenging both the material and conceptual limits of the medium.

During the 1970s, photography moved from the periphery of the art world into its mainstream, steadily gaining visibility in galleries, museums, and universities. A new wave of artists—particularly those working in Conceptual and Performance art—embraced photography as part of their creative practice, joining established photographers who were already pushing the medium forward. In this moment, photography emerged as one of the most experimental tools of contemporary art.

More is More brings together 43 works by 25 artists, several of which are being shown at the Nelson-Atkins for the first time. Among the featured names are David Hockney, Gordon Matta-Clark, Andy Warhol, Barbara Crane, Nancy Burson, Jan Groover, John Baldessari, Lew Thomas, Vito Acconci, Eleanor Antin, Barbara Blondeau, and Ray Metzker, along with many of their contemporaries.

In addition, a complementary selection of photographs is presented in gallery L10, including works by Eadweard Muybridge, Ilse Bing, Irving Penn, Edward Weston, Doris Ulmann, Clarence White, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Louis-Rémy Robert, and William Henry Jackson, among others.

Organized by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, with generous support from the Hall Family Foundation.
