Nikon Releases Z8 Firmware 3.0 With Expanded High-Resolution and Autofocus Features

Nikon has released firmware version 3.0 for the Z8, introducing a range of new functions aimed at enhancing high-resolution imaging, autofocus performance and overall usability. Central to the update is a new pixel-shift high-resolution mode, which, for the first time in a full-frame mirrorless camera, is combined with focus shift and AE bracketing. This function allows the creation of composite images up to 180 megapixels in resolution, with improvements in both depth of field and dynamic range.

The process utilizes the camera’s in-body image stabilization system to shift the sensor by single-pixel increments across a sequence of captures. The technique helps compensate for the limitations of the Bayer pattern sensor by sampling more complete color information across the frame, also reducing issues such as moiré and aliasing. The output, however, must be processed externally using Nikon’s NX Studio, which merges the images into a final high-resolution file. When paired with AE bracketing, the camera records a pixel-shift sequence at each exposure bracket, allowing users to merge the resulting images for additional dynamic range. In both cases, all compositing must be completed on a computer.

The update also introduces a number of autofocus enhancements. A new in-camera focus limiter allows users to define specific focus ranges, reducing hunting and improving subject acquisition speed. Adjustments to the custom Wide-Area AF modes now enable finer control over the placement and size of the focus area, particularly useful for tracking subjects near the edges of the frame. Subject detection is now available when using manual focus or high-resolution digital zoom, and the system also offers up to 400% magnification during Live View for critical focusing.

Several updates have also been made to picture control and color management: flexible Picture Controls can now be created in NX Studio, saved to a memory card and imported into the camera for immediate use; an updated N-Log View Assist function provides more accurate highlight rendering and contrast during video monitoring, closely matching Rec.709 profiles.

Additional features include the ability to record voice memos using external microphones—wired or wireless—for tagging images, particularly useful for photojournalists. The Z8 is now compatible with Nikon’s NX Field remote shooting system, enabling synchronized control and monitoring of up to 10 cameras, with support for real-time file transfer via FTP. A new “Maximum Aperture Live View” mode sets the lens to its widest aperture during composition to improve brightness and autofocus speed before switching to the selected aperture at the time of capture.

The firmware is available now on Nikon’s official website, where detailed installation instructions and the full change log are provided.
