OM System Announces 50-200mm F2.8 Telephoto Zoom Lens
OM System has announced the M.Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm F2.8 IS Pro, a telephoto zoom lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. Equivalent to a 100-400mm focal length on full-frame systems, it combines extended reach with a constant F2.8 aperture across the zoom range.
The lens’ optical construction consists of 21 elements arranged in 13 groups, including one ED element, two Super ED elements, and an ED aspherical lens. A large-diameter EDA lens is also used. Coatings include the Japanese company’s ZERO Coating II to suppress flare and ghosting, as well as a fluorine layer on the front element to repel moisture and dirt.
The lens weighs 1075 grams without its tripod collar, and 1250 grams with it attached. The tripod collar also includes an Arca-Swiss compatible foot and can be detached without tools. The supplied hood features a small access window to allow adjustment of filters such as circular polarizers or variable NDs. Physical controls include a focus limiter switch, image stabilization settings, and customizable buttons. The 50-200mm F2.8 IS Pro is sealed against dust and moisture to an IP53 standard and is freeze-proof down to -10°C. Moreover, a heat-resistant coating on the barrel reduces the risk of internal overheating in strong sunlight.
The aperture uses nine blades, with a range from f/2.8 to f/22, and the minimum focusing distance is 0.78 meters across the zoom range, with a maximum magnification of 0.5x at 200mm. When paired with the MC-20 2x teleconverter, the lens achieves 1x magnification and an 800mm equivalent focal length at F5.6.
The design incorporates internal zooming to maintain balance while extending, and a high-speed focusing system supports continuous autofocus at up to 50 frames per second on compatible bodies. Image stabilization is built into the lens and reaches up to 7 stops when paired with cameras offering in-body stabilization, using OM System’s Sync IS system. On its own, the lens provides up to 5.5 stops of compensation.
