Pentti Sammallahti – Chico Seay – Wesley Stringer: Only the Landscape Has Changed

The Hulett Collection presents Only the Landscape Has Changed, a group exhibition bringing together the photographic practices of Pentti Sammallahti, Chico Seay, and Wesley Stringer. On view through February 14, 2026, the exhibition offers a contemplative exploration of place, time, and the quiet persistence of human presence within the natural world.
Across distinct geographies and generations, these three artists share a sensitivity to subtle moments and understated narratives. Their photographs trace the fragile balance between permanence and change, revealing landscapes not as static backdrops, but as living terrains shaped by memory, observation, and experience.
Sammallahti’s work is marked by an elegant economy of gesture, where spare compositions open onto expansive emotional spaces. His images—often centered on animals, distant horizons, or solitary figures—invite reflection on isolation, connection, and the vastness of the world. Seay draws from the American South, weaving together atmosphere and personal history to create photographs that feel both immediate and deeply remembered. Stringer focuses on contemporary environments and overlooked details, uncovering moments of grace within everyday scenes and finding structure in impermanence.
Together, their works form a quiet conversation about transformation—how places evolve, how time leaves its imprint, and how photography can hold onto fleeting

About the Authors

A portrait of Pentti Sammallahti

Pentti Sammallahti (Finnish, b. 1950) is a Helsinki-born photographer whose poetic vision emerged early, shaped by his grandmother’s practice and by The Family of Man. He began exhibiting in his twenties and later taught at the Helsinki University of Art and Design before receiving Finland’s 15-year State Artist Grant in 1991.

Known for his masterful printing and quiet, contemplative imagery, Sammallahti draws inspiration from northern landscapes, exploring solitude, nature, and human presence. His work was selected by Henri Cartier-Bresson for his personal collection and shown in the inaugural exhibition of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in 2003. He has published thirteen books and received numerous major Finnish photography awards.

A portrait of Chico Seay

Chico Seay is a photographer and ceramic artist based in southwest Missouri. His recent photographic work focuses on the nineteenth-century salt print process, using its tactile qualities to explore the landscapes and environments surrounding him. Through texture, motion, and atmosphere, his images offer a quiet, expressive response to the natural world.

Alongside photography, Seay creates ceramic works characterized by a playful, otherworldly sensibility, most notably sculptural rockets and lidded vessels.

A portrait of Wesley Stringer

Wesley Stringer (American, b. 1985) was born in Oklahoma City and began photographing while completing his BFA at the University of Oklahoma. His work explores the natural environment and its relationship to human-made spaces, with equal attention given to image and object.

Stringer is known for his tactile approach to printing, often presenting photographs as handmade books or box constructions, and working with translucent gampi paper mounted by hand. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the United States and France, including the Museum of Art and Design in New York, and is held in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art Library, New York.
