Samyang Expands Prima Line with 35mm f/1.8 Lens

South Korean company LK Samyang has announced the AF 35mm f/1.8 P FE, a new full-frame prime lens for Sony E-mount cameras and part of the company’s Prima series. The lineup, introduced in 2024, focuses on compact and lightweight lenses positioned for general-purpose use.

The new 35mm f/1.8 model follows earlier Prima releases, including the 35mm f/1.4, 16mm f/2.8, and 85mm f/1.8. Compared to the 35mm f/1.4 version, the new lens is smaller and lighter, measuring approximately 72mm in length and weighing 216 grams. It uses a 62mm filter thread and features a simplified external design with a focus ring, an AF/MF switch, and a USB-C port for firmware updates.

The optical construction consists of 10 elements arranged in eight groups: this includes two aspherical elements and two high-refractive (XHR) elements intended to reduce optical aberrations while maintaining a compact structure. The lens also incorporates a multi-coating system designed to limit flare and ghosting. The aperture uses nine blades.

Autofocus is driven by a Linear STM II motor, which is intended to provide quiet and smooth focusing for both still photography and video, and the minimum focusing distance is 0.27 meters, with a maximum magnification of 0.19x.

The AF 35mm f/1.8 P FE is expected to be available starting in late March. Pricing in South Korea is listed at 399,000 won, which corresponds to approximately $265, although final pricing may vary by region.
