Sigma Reveals 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary APS-C Lens

Sigma has introduced the 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary, a fast wide-angle prime designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The lens follows the earlier 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary released in 2017 and expands the company’s APS-C Contemporary series, which already includes focal lengths such as 12mm, 23mm, 30mm, and 56mm at f/1.4.

The 15mm f/1.4 DC Contemporary provides a slightly wider field of view than the 16mm model it complements, delivering an equivalent focal length of approximately 22.5mm on Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts and 24mm on Canon RF-mount APS-C bodies. Compared to the 16mm version, the new lens is around 30 percent shorter and up to 50 percent lighter, depending on the mount, and reduces the filter diameter from 67mm to 58mm. Weighing about 220 grams for the E-mount version, it is the lightest lens in Sigma’s f/1.4 DC Contemporary lineup.

The optical construction consists of 13 elements in 11 groups, including one FLD element, three SLD elements, and three double-sided aspherical elements. According to the manufacturer, the design prioritizes improved edge-to-edge sharpness and reduced sagittal coma flare, a common issue in fast wide-angle lenses. The lens is also intended to limit flare and ghosting and to maintain consistent performance at its maximum aperture. A nine-blade diaphragm is used to produce a rounded aperture shape.

Autofocus is driven by a stepping motor intended to provide smooth and quiet operation for both still photography and video. Sigma also states that focus breathing has been minimized to support more consistent framing during focus transitions. The lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 17.7 centimeters and features a splash-resistant construction, along with a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front element.

Handling differs slightly by mount: Sony E and Fujifilm X versions include a dedicated aperture ring with an “A” position for camera-controlled aperture selection, while the Canon RF version replaces this with a customizable control ring. The lens measures roughly 65 millimeters in length, depending on mount, and maintains a compact profile intended for handheld and travel use.
