Sony Expands CFexpress 4.0 Type A Lineup
Sony has expanded its CFexpress 4.0 Type A Tough memory card lineup with two new models, the CEA-G480T with 480 GB and the CEA-G240T with 240 GB. These additions join the previously released 960 GB and 1920 GB versions, offering lower capacities at lower prices. According to the Japanese company, the cards deliver read speeds of up to 1,800 MB/s and write speeds of 1,700 MB/s, placing them among the fastest options in the Type A category.
The new cards are compatible with Sony’s Alpha and Cinema Line cameras, including the FX6, FX3, a7 IV, a7R V, a9 III and a1 III. However, no Sony camera currently supports the increased transfer speeds enabled by the CFexpress 4.0 specification, meaning that in practice the cards do not outperform CFexpress 2.0 models during recording. The benefit emerges during file transfer, where pairing a CFexpress 4.0 card with a compatible reader, such as the Sony’s CFexpress 4.0 Type A reader, shortens offload times, an advantage particularly relevant when handling large volumes of 8K video or extended stills bursts.
CFexpress 4.0 was introduced in 2023 and doubles the theoretical bandwidth of CFexpress 2.0 by shifting from PCIe Gen 3 to PCIe Gen 4, enabling higher sustained throughput. While current hardware cannot fully exploit this capability, future camera models are expected to integrate support.
Sony’s new cards will ship next month, with prices set at $260 for the 240 GB version and $360 for the 480 GB version. The larger 960 GB and 1920 GB cards remain priced at $585 and $950. Sony’s CFexpress 4.0 Type A reader, introduced earlier this year, is available for $150.
